IST vs. CS, SE, CE, MIS—Which is Right for You?

IST is Unique. Here's why.

We are often asked, “What is the difference between Information Science & Technologies and other computing disciplines?” While Information Science & Technologies borrows certain skills from computer science, software engineering and information systems, it is unique in that its focus is not on creating the technology, but on empowering the end user.

Computer science and its related programs are technology-centric. Computer scientists like to “look under the hood” --they are concerned with the physical and functional aspects of technology, in and of itself. The IST professional, however, is concerned about applying technology to solve problems for people.

For example, in the computing industry, the computer engineer designs the computer--the hardware and low-level software. The software engineer builds the software architecture, and the computer scientist develops underlying algorithms. The IST professional comes at technology from the other end—from the player's perspective. As an IST student at RIT, you will learn to build software applications, and programming will be a critical part of your education. But your ultimate role will be to adapt technologies to enhance the lives of end users.

What about Information Systems? How does that differ from IST? Computer and Management Information Systems (CIS and MIS) focus on applications in the business environment. IS students take business courses and approach computing from a management perspective. But the IST professional does not focus on a single domain. You may find yourself working in a business environment, but you could just as easily have an IST career in manufacturing, medical information, or the entertainment industry. Wherever IST is used in society, you will find an IST Professional.

If you're not sure which program is right for you, you may want to test the waters first. We recommend that you start with Computer Science, because it's easier to migrate to IST from Computer Science or Software Engineering than the other way around. These credits will transfer to IST more easily as well.

Before you decide, check IST out. It may open up exciting new worlds for you.
