Information Technology at RIT

Your Future. Welcome to IT.

Designing an interactive fountain for a city park. Building an electronic medical records system. Developing applications for mobile devices...studying Information Technology at RIT is anything but textbook. Hands-on, challenging, and project-oriented, our program combines a solid technological foundation with the essential skills of critical thinking, creativity and communication. As the first program of its kind in North America, we are the model for other universities and continue to be a pioneer in the field. We are proud of the fact that our graduates enter a broad range of fields and are hired by companies such as Microsoft and Apple. But our students aren't limited to working at high-tech companies. They can enter any field where people use technology, which is virtually anywhere.

The IT program at RIT was born during the PC explosion of the late 1980s, when more people were using computers than ever before. We saw the need for a new kind of computing professional; a user's advocate who could provide technical support and improve upon the human interface. In 1992, we became the first baccalaureate program in Information Technology in the United States. We launched our MS program in 1995, and a decade later we are among the first group of IT programs to be accredited by the Computer Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.

With the mass marketing of technological products, the pervasiveness of the World Wide Web, and the increasing need for technology to be more intuitive, our program is ever changing with the times. At RIT, you can study technologies such as:

  • Human-computer interaction
  • Application development
  • Database concepts
  • Networking and system administration
  • Electronic commerce
  • Learning and performance technology.

Because the world of IT is constantly changing, we are committed to providing you with the cutting-edge technical education you'll need as a future IT professional. Ask us "what's new" with our program, and we'll tell you-"what isn't new?"
