Medical Informatics Tracks

Medical Informatics has 3(three) tracks. Each graduate of Medical Informatics will provide computing expertise to the medical field. The three tracks of the program offer the students flexibility in the selection of courses and prepare them best for the specific roles they wish to have in their career of Medical Informatics.

  • Medical Informatics (BS) IT Track - Every graduate of the Medical Informatics program has a strong knowledge of both the medical and the computing fields and is able to use computer technology to manage the medical information and to improve the quality of patient care. The main job responsibilities of those graduating with the IT track will be the installation and support of clinical information systems, medical database design, and development of database and Web applications. The main difference from the CS track is the selection of computing courses.
  • Medical Informatics (BS) CS Track - Every graduate of the Medical Informatics program has a strong knowledge of both the medical and the computing fields and is able to use computer technology to manage the medical information and to improve the quality of patient care. The main job responsibilities of those graduating with the CS track will be the development of new clinical information systems and other medical software for patient care, medical education or medical research. The main difference from the IT track is the selectionof computing courses.
  • Medical Informatics (BS) Pre-Med Track - RIT is the first University to provide a premedical program in Medical Informatics. Those medical informatics students interested in later applying to medical, dental, or veterinary school have the option of following the premedical curriculum. They follow the CS track, but replace some of the computing courses with physics and organic chemistry.
