What is the Information Technology (IT) program at RIT? Many people think of IT in terms of business or industry—creating hardware and software systems for information storage and retrieval. But in the past decade, IT has become a a human enterprise as well as a corporate one. IT is all around us, in everything we do. From watching cable TV to sending an email, IT and its products have permeated our culture and our economy. The paradox of IT in our society is that everybody uses it, but few understand it. In a rapidly changing technological world, we need experts that make it simple for individuals, businesses and companies to get the job done without having to wonder how it is done.
Making technology work for people, and not the other way around, is what IT program at RIT is all about. Our focus on how people work, live, and interact with technology—what works for them, what doesn't—is what distinguishes us from other programs such as Computer Science. IT is about problem solving—helping people to make sense of today's computing technologies, to know how to implement it, and to understand how to use it.
In the not-too-distant past, innovative thinkers used the principles of information technology to design the computer mouse, build the first laptop, create the Internet and then the World Wide Web, develop the first cell phone application, etc. IT at RIT will encourage that same spirit of innovation in you, and give you a solid foundation of professionalism so that you can take your career in IT virtually anywhere.
