Graduate Study in Information Science & Technologies

Take IT to the limit.

Intense, focused, fascinating.
A immerse yourself in the computing topics that are your passion.
A conceptual journey; an empirical voyage.

At RIT, the graduate programs offered by the Information Sciences & Technologies (IST) department are all this, and more. Our graduate students explore the many facets of information technology (IT) at a deeper level of inquiry in disciplines ranging from software development for specific user communities to the enterprise, for the Web to eLearning, and from databases to human-computer interaction.

These programs prepare students for further study or professional advancement in a variety of IT specialty areas. They also expand upon the philosophy of our undergraduate programs—to arrive at a deeper understanding of how humans use evolving technological systems. With the advent of the World Wide Web, the PC revolution, and new innovations in telecommunications, today's technological landscape is increasingly diversified and complex. The information technologist needs to have a sophisticated skillset, as well as a view of the “big picture” -- the fundamental problems facing business, industry, and education in meeting the needs of users.

To this end, the graduate programs offered by the IST department at RIT differ from other computing programs in that students do not simply focus on a particular technology in isolation. The technologies of the future are going to demand a more advanced level of expertise, along with a broader scope of knowledge. Our programs merge these approaches in a fun and challenging environment that is team-oriented yet encourages self-discovery and independent inquiry.
