Academic Advising

Undergradaute Academic Advising, in the department of Information Sciences & Technologies is provided by Professional Academic Advisors and Faculty Advisors.

What is a professional academic advisor? The professional advising staff consists of two individuals who:

  • Provide accurate and timely information about your program.
  • Evaluate your progress toward completing your degree and communicating concerns regarding your progress.
  • Interpret and communicate the Institute, college, and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist you if you experience academic difficulty.
  • Assist you with evaluating your experiences and choices to help you develop life-long skills.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and departments across campus to enhance your educational experience.

Who are the professional academic advisors?

How do you find an academic advisor?  The Student Services & Academic Advising Center, located in the Golisano building (GOL), room 2120, has open walk-in advising hours during the week. Walk-in hours are available to address your quick advising questions or concerns that can generally be answered within 10-15 minutes.  The times will be prominently displayed on the office door.  We encourage you to make an appointment for all other needs.  To schedule an appointment with an advisor, contact Megan Fritts, Senior Staff Assistant, at 585-475-2700.

Tips for a Successful Advising Visit:

  • Tell Megan, or our student employee, the reason for your visit. You may not need to see an advisor.
  • Write a list of questions to bring with you to the meeting.
  • Tell your advisor as much information as possible regarding your situation. All visits are kept confidential.
  • If you don't understand an answer, ask for clarification.

What is a faculty advisor? You will be assigned a faculty advisor who will help you with course content-related questions and career planning issues. You will be given the name of your faculty advisor at the academic advising session during Orientation. You should plan on meeting your faculty advisor sometime in the first few weeks of school to say hi and get acquainted.
