ICSA 411: Data Communications and Computer Networking

11/5/97 Groups presenting Monday are 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7. Groups presenting Wednesday are 4, 6, and 8.
11/5/97 If you weren't in class today, please stop by my office or the CS/IT Office and pick up a course evaluation form. The information you need for it is:
  • Instructor: ELL
  • Course Number: 0602 411 01
  • Quarter: 971
When you're done, turn it in to the CS/IT office. (If it's closed, you can slide it under the door.)
9/23/97 My office hours for Wednesday, 9/24, have been cancelled. I will instead have office hours Friday from 1-3. Sorry for any inconvenience.
9/22/97 I've uploaded the PowerPoint presentations for all classes to date; they're on the web site (check the index page for the class) in HTML and native PowerPoint97 formats, and in the FirstClass folder in PP97 format. You can get the free viewer from Microsoft directly from their site (Win95 and NT only). Or you can use the web version.
9/15/97 It turns out that plenum rating is an important concept to know, and I now remember why I had to know it when I was doing in-house networking! It refers to cable that is permissible in ventilation spaces; a/c ducts, and any other spaces where air goes from one part of a building to another. Plenum-rated cable, unlike standard PVC-coated cable, will not give off noxious fumes if it burns. You can see why you wouldn't want standard PVC coating in air spaces, right? You can only run non-plenum-rated cable (e.g. standard PVC coating) through plenum spaces if you run it through separate fire-resistant conduit. An excellent question, and an important piece of information to know.
9/15/97 For today only, due to a meeting conflict, my office hours will be 2:30-4:30 rather than 1-3. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
9/15/97 For those of you having trouble downloading and/or viewing the PowerPoint versions of my presentations, the problem may be that you're simply clicking on the link on the presentation page. If you do this, your browser will assume it's an HTML document and try to view it as such, garbling the info. I don't have access to the server config files, so I can't fix this. However, there is a way around it. Rather than clicking on the link, right-click on it instead (or click and hold with a Mac), and select "Save Link As..." from the contextual pop-up menu. This will let you save the binary version to disk. You'll then need either PowerPoint97, or the most recent version of the PowerPoint viewer, to view and/or print it. (Alternatively, you can download the files from the FirstClass folder.)
9/11/97 You will not be expected to know the formulas for representing time-domain and frequency-domain concepts presented on pages 54-60, or those for signal loss and channel capacity on pages 71-74. My concern in this chapter is that you understand the general concepts, not the mathematical specifics.
9/10/97 I've uploaded a revised version of this week's PowerPoint presentation to both the web site and the FirstClass conference.
9/10/97 Having trouble getting onto FirstClass? Take a look at this link from the IT web site; it has instructions and links to the necessary files. Still having trouble? Go to the IT lab (Building 18) and talk to a labbie.
9/8/97 The following people did not have accounts on the FirstClass server, so I've asked the lab to set them up:
  • Group 1: Nathan Ewing, Jason Fink, Greg Petitto
  • Group 2: George Beckinghausen, Darren Faivre, Svetlana Pinchman
  • Group 3: Jennifer DePace
  • Group 4: Hanh Doan, Jason Hassan, David O'Connor, Stephen Sherry
  • Group 5: Venu Keesari
  • Group 6: John Becker, Scott Kragen
  • Group 7: Brian Chappel, Alan Lawton, Brian Miller, Preston Wilson
  • Group 8: Sean Decker, Jeff New, Ralph Whitbeck.
If you thought you had an account, and your name shows up on this list, check with the lab. You might have an account on the distance learning FirstClass server, which is different from the server in IT. If so, you can use the same software, but need to get the IT settings file (available from the IT web site).
9/8/97 An HTML version of this week's PowerPoint slides is linked to this week's topic on the online syllabus. The PowerPoint file itself is available in the ICSA 411 (971) conference on the FirstClass server.
