I did some research on Kevin Mitnick and the amount of pages, articles and other opinions is overwhelming! I also would like to point out that the bias towards both sides is so ridiculous, it is comical! Personally, I think I will choose another personality, and hope that the information out there is not as biased.
Anyways, here is a peek at who Kevin Mitnick (for those of you who don't know) is;
Kevin made this list for being (in the mid-90s) one of the most wanted computer "criminal" and social engineer. He had broken into various companies networks (Sun, DEC, etc.), supposedly stole intellectual property, stole proprietary software source code and then posted it to the puclic, intercepted data and voice comunications (a cell phone jockey :-D ). He was caught by Tsutomu Shimomura in Raleigh, NC my means of cell phone tracking and triangulation.
Today, he is free (did I mention he served 40 months in prison, and that he is still on probation?) and runs a consultion firm to help other firms to train their staff and secure their electronic resources from maluse.
Here is picture of him with cuffs as well as a short biography of Tsutomu Shimomura ; http://www.takedown.com/bio/index.html (a very biased site by the way - which you would expect it to be; it is Tsutomu Shimomura's! )
Posted by: Tony Bacaj on September 9, 2004 11:33 AM | Permalink to CommentWhy do you think they made this list? (What did they do? What makes them noteworthy?) This engineer helped design an innovation which was nicknamed "The Trojan Cockroach" which was a project in the 1980s at Carnegie Mellon University. This "cockroach" was in effect one of the first walking machines developed and actually worked. This is not his only accomplishment as he has recieved the Smithsonian Award for visualizing computer code into what we now consider as graphics. He also recieved the Price Waterhouse Information Technology Leadership Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1996. In 1968 these graphics were crude yet cutting edge and without Ivan Sutherland there would be no Sun Microsystems and the products we now take advantage and don't even think twice about would not be around. Not just inventing or designing is his cup of tea but also writing. Fourty-Nine publishings and 12 patents is under his belt.
What are they doing now? Mr. Sutherland is currently the Vice President of Sun Microsystems, Inc. and continually researching newer and advanced techniques, code, and ideas.
When and where were they were born? In 1938 in Hastings, Nebraska
Have they written any articles or books in the past five years? If so, what? Yes, "Logical Effort: Designing Fast CMOS Circuits" in 1999

Perhaps the most prominent being a windowed graphical user interface, which is seen in virtually every modern computer system. But in addition, he was involved with the creation of Smalltalk programming language and also as a key player in the concept of object-oriented programming. He also conceptualized the idea of a personal laptop computer called "Dynabook" as well.

I think they made this list because these people made significant contributions to the growth of technology and development. Allan Kay is co founder of microsoft and helped engeneer Ms Dos and Word. What makes him noteworthy is the fact that most students and including myself use dos and word to write programs such as java. This advances students carrers and enables them to improve or take his work even further into development. www.time.com/time/digital/cyberelite/13.html
Now he is working on wired world a trying to link entertainment with technology.
He was born in seattle washington. Januaary 1, 1953

John Carmack
While not on the list, I chose programming guru John Carmack. He is responsible for games such as Wolfenstein, the Doom series, and the Quake series. His games are known world-wide and have had influenced the way every first person shooter is created today. His programming skills are among the best in the world, and his focus on detail is amazing.
He is the founder of id software and still works as lead programmer there. He also recently started a space program.
He was born August 20th, 1970 and Shawnee Mission, Kansas.
A biography was just written on the creators of Doom (Carmack and Romero) and Carmacks programmings logs have recently been converted to blog format for anyone to read. They document his programs from mid-90s to 2002.
