Web Design and Implementation (Winter 04-05)

Introductions (28 November 2004)

Post a brief introduction of yourself, focused on your RIT and web development background. What program and year are you in? When did you take 320, and with whom? What outside-of-class web development experience do you have? Why are you taking this course? What are you hoping to learn?

In the "URL" box, put a link to your IMM web page, or a personal web page that you've created. (Preferably with a photo of you!)

I am a 4th year IT major who took 340 in 2001. I do not have much experience with webpages as shown in my IDM site, and I want to learn more advanced topics. I hope this class will allow me to create better webpages.

My name is Matt Muoio and I am a second year NM IT student. I took 320 with Jeff Sonstein during the winter quarter last year. I've been making web sites since I was in 7th grade(although they sucked then). My latest work is http://jiten-anime.com because I'm a dork and like that kinda stuff.

My name is Nick and I am a 4th year IT major from Mamaroneck, NY. I took 320 with Professor Lawley fall quarter of last year. Outside of class, I have a lot of prior web experience working for ASK.com (Ask Jeeves), more specifically, Interactive Search Holdings, as a producer for the last 6 years. I am taking this class as part of my multimedia concentration and hope to learn about some of the more basic stuff in web site implementation and design.

I forgot to say why I'm taking this course. It is a requirement for my major, but I am interested in learning more complex things about web design.

Oops, I took 320 in 2001 not 340.

My name is Matthew Doyle, and I am currently a third year IT student. I took 320 with Chad Weeden in the Spring. In my personal experience, I have been working with simple HTML since I was 15. I did not move out of the static world until I came here, but I have worked on various websites including a friend run gaming news website and a gaming clan website. Currently I have been very interested in dynamic website design and have been learning PHP for about a month. My personal goal is to develop a full working forum website based on PHP and mySQL. I am taking this course because I have an interest in website development and I would one day like to get a job in web design, and this course is a step in the right direction. I am hoping to learn more about how websites are implemented and further excel in my web development learning.

I'm bryan miller, a second year IT New Media student. I took 320 in the fall of 03 with Professor Wheeland. I have very little out of class experience with website design and implimentation. Although i have done a bit of personal work just for fun. I am taking this course because i need it to graduate, but also because i enjoy web design and want to learn how to create more beautiful pages. I hope to gain some extra knowledge and be able to interact in a group to use that knowledge to make a desireable product.
I apologise in advance for my personal site, its all i've got on the internet at the moment. i'll post something better at a later date.

My name is James Schmatz and I am a second year student in the New Media / IT program. I took 320 back in Winter of my first year, Winter 2003, with Jeffrey Sonstein. I have worked with many forms of development outside of the classroom, including HTML, Javascript, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. I have played with a few of them, but could not claim to be proficient in some of them. I am taking this course because it is required but also to enhance my web development skills and the professional traits for being a web designer, not to mention working in a group of people to create a site. I am hoping to enhance my HTML, CSS, and Unix skills in this class, and to learn to work with others as a team to make a site.

I'm currently an IT undergraduate student, working on concentrations in Games Design and Multimedia Applications.. Fourth year and I think I took 320 with Andy annd Chad 3 (maybe 4?) years ago around the time I switched out of CS. I've built crappy little websites for myself out of boredom and not gone anywhere with them in the past, sooo nothing to point to and laugh at.. And I'm taking this course because it's part of the concentration and because I really could use the knowledge in web based design.

Hey, I am Dave.

I am a 3rd year IT student, and I took 320 with prof. lawley last year. Although I consider myself just a application programmer, I maintain my own weblog and like web design. I am taking this course to spruce up on my web design talents and see if I can't just happen to create something that looks good in the process.

Im in New Media Design, and i am a third year student. I took 320 last year, with a male teacher, whose name i don't remember. I helped build the Hillel site this summer in an internship, but i did the design only. I am hoping to get comfortable enough with web design so i can start creating website effectivly. I want to learn to love web design. Or something close to that.

I am a second year New Media Design major. I took 320 during winter quarter of my freshman year with professor Sonstein. I really don't have any outside of class web development, as I didn't have the best luck with my IMM class/teacher. I would like to really enhance my html and css skills because they really aren't where I would like them to be at this point. I'm taking this course because it is required but I think that it will help me out a great deal in my understanding and implementation of coding, etc.

My name is Sudha and I'm a third year IT/New Media student. I took 320 in the winter of 2001-2002, with Professor Lawley. I don't really have any outside-of-class web development experience. I'm taking this course because it's required but I also really want to learn this stuff.

I am a second year New Media Design Student. The only background I have in web development is from IMM, 320. I took it during the winter quarter last year with Elyssa and Chad Weeden. I don't really have much experience outside of class, but I have been working on a website for my high school basketball team. I am taking this course because it is a requirement, but I am also very interested in learning more about website design.

Hi, I'm Greg (scattered applause)

I am a second-year IT/ New Media student, and this was the last class I was able to acquire, and am happy to have done so, as the Java programming class I was previously taking barely had a familiar face in it. I have no real "hobbies" or "a life" outside of Airsoft, a sport like paintball that I have recently become obsessed with, and have a website for (http://www.hybridleague.com) that only sucks because it is in a complete overhaul period.

I took 320 with Andy Wheeland 1 year ago, did well enough to get an A, and have developed a few small hobby sites since. Im taking this course because I believe that Java would help my HTML only after I know it fairly well.

My name is Phil Leith-Tetrault. I am a second year New Media Design major at RIT. I took 320 with Harris. The only out of class web development experience I have is updating a company's site over the summer during my internship with them. I used dreamweaver and basic HTML. I am taking this course so that I can become more confortable with web design, and area that I want to explore over the next few years. I hope to learn more about XHTML and its uses and become more confortable with site design.

My name is Kyle Nikolich and I am a second year IT New Media student. I have minimal expirience with web design and find it quite frustrating at times. I hope to learn much about every aspect of webdesign. With formal training I might actually begin to like it.

I took 320 during the winter of 2003-2004 with Jeff Sonstien. He liked to wear a NASA sweatshirt all the time.

Hi, I'm a third year IT student who is focusing on networking and web site stuff. I took IMM winter of last year with Prof Weeden. I've been throwing together websites for a awhile now but none of them were very useful or pretty until sometime around last year when i at least tried to make something nice looking. www.randomfool.net is my latest attempt at making anything decent, whether it is pretty or useful is still in doubt but it gives me something to play with when i'm bored.

I am a 2nd year IT/New Media student from Adams, Massachusetts. I took IMM (320) in Fall 2003 with Prof. Henderson.

I have helped construct various websites with friends but nothing of great importance or in-depth coding.

I'm taking this course because a) it is required, and b) i am giving great consideration into the web concentration for my major, and hope to learn a lot.

Hello,
I'm Andy Lorino, 4th year IT student. I never took 320( IMM ) because I transfered into IT after 2 years of CS and I got credit for the class from one of my classes though I have no clue which one. I'm taking this course because it is required for the interactive digital media concentration and thats really all I care about with computers. I took the gaming classes and now these digital media classes. I really hate networking and system administration and all that crap. I'm hoping to learn nifty things with web design because its useful, and actually eager to learn the languages in the back-end server side part of it because php and the other junk sounds fun.

I am a fourth-year IT major concentrating in networking and system administration, and I am taking this class as a professional elective. I took 320 with Professor Lawley back in the fall of 2001 as a freshman. I enjoy dabbling in webdesign as a hobby and am really looking forward to learning more CSS and/or JavaScript/DHTML concepts that I can utilize on my personal site.

My program is New Media Design and I am a second year student. I took IMM in last year in winter quarter with Professor Harris. I don't have any outside of class web development experience besides what I have learned in class. I am taking this class because it is a requirement in my program, but I did enjoy IMM so I believe I will enjoy this class as well. I hope to refresh my memory of html and to learn to do as much as I can to make functional websites.

If you go to my website right now, you will see nothing there. All sites I made there were promptly removed when the classes required for them ended. I still have the site documents on my computer, so I'll have to re-upload them later.

Anyway, I am a New Media IT (no surprise there, I guess) sophomore student. I took 320 last year in the Fall quarter (031) under Professor Henderson. All of my web development experience has amounted to small sites made for various classes, nothing out of class, and my experience is rather sparse (I only know some basic HTML and UNIX). I am taking this class because it is required for my major, and the skills I learn could be important for job opportunities when I graduate (assuming everthing isn't outsourced by then).

Hello, I'm Elizabeth (Beth for short), and I'm a second year New Media Design student. I took IMM last winter with Professor Jefferson. I don't have much of a web decelopment background... only what I completed in IMM. I am taking this course because it is required, however, I feel that it will be extremely helpful and I am looking forward to creating better websites. My hope is that I will have a solid understanding of basic HTML and CSS when I finish the course, and be able to better use available resources for help.

I'm a professional student in my 5th or 6th full time year of school who has tried 3 different majors and 4 different schools. I don't know what year student I am, because I haven't paid attention to that since my 3rd sophomore year. I've been a New Media Design major for the last year and a half, and I took IMM last semester with Professor Lawley. I don't have a lot of outside class web development experience, and I'm taking this class because a)its required by my major b)I want to learn more about web design. By the way, los of people go to school for 7 years (they're called doctors).

My name's Kevin. Seeing as I know about hmmm...6 or 7 people in this class, the rest of you better pay attention!

I'm a 2nd-year New Media Design major (I make things on the computer look pretty!). I took IMM last winter with the Weedens (Elissa taught, Chad was the TA). I learned...not a whole lot, but it was a good refresher course I suppose- I'm hoping to pick up a little more in this class (I'm taking it because it's part of my program core), like more advance CSS (positioning mostly) and learn a little more PHP if possible.

Outside of the class, I've been designing and coding websites for the past 8 years. Currently, I work as a designer with a web-development firm in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.

Anything else you want to know...just...ask me. Or IM me, if you're really that intimidated by me.

Hi, my name's Jeremy, I am a fourth year Information Technology student. I've taken 320 and 330, and have created variuos web pages. I transferred here from a community college, which is where I took the equivalent of 320. I also was a TA at RIT for 320 as well. I worked on a few web pages for my previous school as part of a co-op, here is an example of some of the work I did:

Hello,

My name is Ryan Weigand. I am majoring in I.T. New Media. I am a sophomore, and I like programming and web design. The only real website I have left over is my one from Programming II for New Media - it's an ugly, bad site. I took IMM last year during the fall quarter with Professor Wheeland, and I hope I can remember my HTML! Admitedly, I haven't been doing any out-of-class web design like I should have been doing, but I have been looking foward to this class since I heard about it. I am hoping to learn (or relearn) good web structure and hopefully how to better integrate flash/director projects for the web!

I'm Erin, a third year regular IT student. I transferred in from a little community college back home in the spring. I took 320 during the spring quarter with Andy Wheeland. I don't have very much web design experience - I've done a few things for classwork, but nothing really on my own (besides some livejournal stuff, and that's basically all done for you so it doesn't count). I suck at webdesign (layout, colors, graphics, everything!) but am hoping that this class will change that a little bit. I do really want to learn how to make pages look and function better than with the limited knowledge and limited functionality that I know.

I am a second year IT New Media student. I took 320 last year in the fall with Henderson. I took a website class in high school. I am taking this class to become a better website builder. I think that from taking this class I will be able to make better working and looking websites.

My name is Kevin Kroetsch and I am a third year standard IT major, taking this class to see if I want to continue with the web development IT concentration. I took 320 two years ago (fall '02) with prof. Wheeland. Outside of class, I likely have a similar background to other IT students: I have experimented somewhat with making websites, and know a reasonable amount about Dreamweaver and Flash. Based on other similar courses that I have taken, I expect to do fairly well in this course and hope to learn the basics of web design needed for future classes.

Hello all!

I'm Shaena; I'm a third year New Media Design student. I transferred to RIT last fall after getting my Associates from Finger Lakes Community College in Graphic Design. Although I transferred out of 320, I just completed the programming sequence and am excited to begin learning more in this course!

I've developed a few websites using Dreamweaver, although they're more graphical than textual based. The link above is for my art portfolio; I just began creating the site over break, so only the Digital and Common Media pages are working. I'm also working on a website for Encore, RIT's only All-Female a capella group, which is still in the development stages. You can check it out at:
http://www.rit.edu/~encrewww/

Again, I'm really looking forward to learning more about web development in this class :) Here's to a great quarter!

Hi, I'm Kent Walker. I'm a fourth year student majoring in information technology. I've taken two courses in website development 320 and 330. I took 320 with Tona Henderson in Fall 2003. I took 330 with Michelle Harris in the Spring 2004. From these courses I learned a great deal about programs like Macromedia Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop, as well as, the basics in designing websites. I don't have much experience outside of classwork in Web site design and development. I'm currently enrolled in Army ROTC at RIT.
