Assignment 2: Web Site Evaluation Critera

Organization
============
*General (and, if possible, specific) type of organization/classification (e.g. exact/alphabetical; ambiguous/genre; task-oriented/shopping; audience-specific; metaphor-driven/architectural). If there is no clear organizational scheme, document that.

*Whether the site has a clear hierarchy, and if so, whether it is narrow and deep or broad and shallow

*Whether a consistent ("controlled") vocabulary is used throughout the site

Navigation
==========
Does the site provide appropriate "you are here" context clues?

*Are navigational controls clearly visible and consistent in placement?

*Can you quickly move to other parts of the site, without having to "back out"?

*Does it use "mystery meat" navigation (see http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/), or can you immediately tell where icons will take you?

*Is there one navigational system, or more? (e.g global and local).

*If frames are used, do they enhance or detract from identifying current location and/or navigating to other sections?

*If hidden navigation (e.g. pull-down/pop-up menus) are used, is it clear that the information is available?

*Is there any kind of table of contents or site map to provide a "bird's-eye view" of the site?

Labeling
========
*Are labels clear, or do you have to have annotations to tell you what they are and what they do?

*Is the labelling systematic, or random? (p. 74-75)

*Do labels contradict or draw from current naming conventions (e.g. will "search" do what people expect? will "home" take them where they expect to go?)

*Are ad hoc links clear, or confusing? (p. 96)

Searching
=========
*Is it clear what you're searching? (full-text? specific fields? all documents? some docs?)

*Is it clear how to search? (syntax, use of boolean operators, etc)

*Is sufficient information provided on the results screen (whether or not there are hits)?

*Are results accurate and/or relevant?

*How are errors (misspellings, etc) treated?
