social computing

I am the director of RIT's Lab for Social Computing, a multidisciplinary resarch group located in the RIT Libraries.

My areas of interest in social computing focus primarily on the use of social computing tools in academia--how do tools like weblogs, wikis, and backchannels change the nature of the educational experience? How can these tools be used to improve education, for both the teachers and the students?

I was the principal investigator for NSF Grant No. EIA-0305973, "Understanding Gendered Attrition in Departments of Information Technology." The project web site has more information on the grant, including the full grant proposal.
