Introduction to Multimedia: The Internet & the Web

Basic Filesystem Paths and Permissions

More Unix & ftp

A filesystem makes files and directories available to applications like a web server. The permissions you set on directories and files are the way you control who has how much access to your directories and files. UNIX machines use the chmod command to set permissions on directories and files.

The ftp application you use is an invaluable tool for moving files from one machine to another. You might create graphics on one machine, and then you might want to place them on another machine which is a web server. You would use an ftp client to accomplish this.

This session we will focus on reviewing how to get information about and how to set the permissions for directories and files. This session we will also set up a directory structure on grace, which we will use for this class for the rest of this Quarter. This session we will also practice using an ftp client to move some files around.
